Podcast #6 - The Rat Race

The Mr Vocab Podcast is available on Amazon Android, Google Play and iTunes App Store.

Big cities are known for the hustle and bustle, but if you really want to see the rat race first hand, try going to the main train station of any major city, between 7 - 9 am on a Monday.

This is when the trains offload the men and women in their suits, men and women who have left the solitude of the countryside, to return to the smog and the promise of wealth.

The rat race is all about getting ahead. It’s about promotions, pay rises and job titles. It’s about playing the game. Some people get promoted because they have the gift of the gab. Others get promoted as a reward for their diligence.

But the rat race isn’t for everybody. It requires a thick skin, perseverance and focus. If that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, then you’re not alone. There’s nothing wrong with spending your Monday morning lying in bed.

  • I know you don’t like office politics Henry, but sometimes you just need to play the game.

  • Rosie can sell anything, she’s so good at talking to people. She’s really got the gift of the gab.

  • You need to have a thick skin to work in politics, a lot of people will insult you and call your ideas ‘stupid’.

  • Working in an office isn’t really my cup of tea. I want a job outdoors.
